The School Curriculum

For the first three years pupils follow a general course of education, which includes all the prescribed National Curriculum subjects. For detailed information please see our Subject pages.

In Year Eight, pupils continue with French or start Spanish. Some will take two languages.

Towards the end of Year Nine, the decision is taken about which subjects each pupil will study to examination level. Parents, pupils, teachers and careers staff collaborate to enable the pupil to make an informed choice. For detailed information please see our KS4 Options page. There is currently a requirement for each pupil to study within the following categories:

  • Physical Education (P.E.);
  • Citizenship;
  • Religious Education (RE);
  • English;
  • Mathematics;
  • Science;
  • ICT

In addition pupils can currently choose to study:

  • Art
  • Business Studies
  • Computer Science
  • Construction BTEC
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Engineering
  • Food Technology
  • French
  • Geography

The next step for around 89% of the school’s pupils is the transfer to full-time further education. The A level track record of former FitzWimarc pupils remains consistently strong and a considerable number of them go on to win places in colleges or universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
